Staffing and Scheduling Analysis

Staffing and scheduling is an Achilles heel for many hospitalist practices. Staffing and scheduling challenges may emerge due to unexpected (and rapid) program growth, an expansion of the scope of services offered, or due to hospitalist retention and/or recruitment difficulties. Practices may also experience inefficiencies related to a mismatch in provider staffing to workload ratio, ineffective hospitalist scheduling, or a flawed practice model. Whatever the root cause, staffing and scheduling problems can undermine the delivery of quality care and/or lead to hospitalist job dissatisfaction and practice instability.

HPS understands the dynamics associated with staffing and scheduling. We will provide your program with a comprehensive evaluation to diagnose the problem(s) and offer solutions from which you can choose.  We will consider several factors prior to recommending a particular scheduling model. These fMedical Staffactors include:

  • Continuity of care and communication
  • Schedule flexibility
  • Efficiency
  • Scope of services offered
  • Staffing requirements and monetary resources
  • Night and weekend call coverage responsibilities
  • Long-term goals
  • Medical staff support
  • Local competition

We know practice models that are flexible, enhance hospitalist quality of life, and avoid burnout will support successful recruitment and retention of hospitalist physicians.  There are many options available which will accomplish these goals depending upon your unique situation. For example, this may involve utilization of midlevel providers (Physician Assistant, Nurse Practitioner), part-time hospitalists, or allow for job sharing.

HPS will work with you to identify your program’s appropriate staffing requirements for today and in the future (based on anticipated growth). We will provide recommendations on staff composition (number and provider type), the daily work schedule (number of hospitalists, start-end of workday, shift type, etc.) and practice model (block, shift, traditional, etc.) that will support program success and long-term sustainability.

* The staffing and scheduling analysis can be offered as a stand alone service or in conjunction with other services we provide.
