Accomplishments
Dr. Simone is board certified in Family Medicine and a Fellow of Hospital Medicine. He founded the first hospitalist program in Maine and served as its Administrative Director for ten years. During this time Dr. Simone served as a liaison between the hospitalist program and a ten rural hospital alliance. He expanded the program from one physician to a ten physician and three midlevel provider practice. He oversaw multiple transitions and enhanced the financial success of the practice. During Dr. Simone’s tenure, the referral base increased annually and the program became influential in maintaining the viability and success of the sponsoring hospital.
Prior to serving as Administrative Director of the hospitalist program, Dr. Simone built a successful four-provider private family medicine practice, increasing profitability annually. He later was a founding member of the largest primary care group in the greater Bangor area and currently serves as Vice President. He has been awarded Recognition by the National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA) and the American Diabetes Association (ADA) by their Diabetes Physician Recognition program. Dr. Simone enjoys teaching medical students and residents and has served as a mentor for undergraduates interested in the medical profession.
In addition to his medical practice and administrative duties, Dr. Simone has served as both Chief of Family Medicine and Medical Staff President at St. Joseph Hospital in Bangor, Maine. Upon completing his two year term as president he was asked to serve a third year. During his tenure as president, he spearheaded the credentialing and privileging of low activity staff members and was responsible for the reorganization of both the Medicine and Family Practice Departments. He also participated in multiple state hospital surveys and Joint Commission inspections. While president, Dr. Simone developed a semiannual medical staff newsletter to foster communication with the medical staff.
Over the last two decades, Dr. Simone has also been intimately involved in medical staff development and expansion at St. Joseph Hospital. He is a proven medical staff leader who is frequently called upon for guidance. He has been a member of St. Joseph’s medical executive committee for fifteen consecutive years. He continues to work closely with this institution.
Dr. Simone is a charter member of The Society of Hospital Medicine (SHM) and has been actively involved with the society, chairing the Chapter Support Committee and serving on the Family Medicine Task Force. He has also co-facilated the Family Medicine Forum during SHM’s annual conference on multiple occasions. In addition to his work nationally, Dr. Simone founded the Maine-New Hampshire Hospitalist Chapter of SHM and continues to be its leader.
Dr. Simone is recognized as one of the top hospitalist management consultants in the nation and an expert in the hospitalist field. He has been invited to speak at many conferences nationwide. He served as workshop facilitator for the World Research Group ("Optimizing the Role of the Hospitalist") in Las Vegas, Nevada, and was a featured speaker for the Hospitalist Management Advisor Symposium ("Developing and Maximizing your Hospitalist Program") in Savannah, Georgia and Palm Springs, California. He was also a keynote panel speaker for the New Hampshire Hospital Association’s Annual Meeting ("Recruitment, Retention, and your Hospitalist Program") in Bretton Woods, New Hampshire and continues to receive multiple requests each year to speak.
Dr. Simone is cited frequently in the literature and serves as an editorial advisory board member for a national hospitalist publication. He was a special contributor for the Clinical Advisory Board 2007 ("The Hospitalist-Powered Enterprise: Best Practices for Maximizing the Value of Hospitalist Programs") and has written four hospitalist books.
Dr. Simone has served on numerous boards throughout his career. He is currently serving on the Board of Trustees at the University of New England as well as the board of Sunbury Medical Associates. Dr. Simone previously served on the board of PONEM (Physicians of Northern and Eastern Maine), a physician run group representing physician interests during the emergence of managed care in the early 1990’s. He also served as board member of MedNet (Medical Network of Maine), a physician owned and run medical network.
