Hospitalist Recruitment and Retention; Building a Hospital Medicine Program

“There are significant differences between the Mature, Baby Boomer, Gen X, and Millennial generations. These differences result from the varied experiences each generation has had on a personal level as well as on a global level. On a personal level for instance, the Baby Boomers typically grew up with stay at home moms while Gen X typically had dual working (e.g. worked outside of the home) parents. On a global level, the Mature generation grew up during the depression and WW II, the Boomers during both the Cold War and start of the Viet Nam War, Gen X during the Viet Nam War and Watergate, and the Millennials during the technological explosion. As a consequence, there is considerable divergence in how each generation views their world. This perception, in turn, affects individual values, goals, and expectations both personally and professionally. These generational differences have had a significant impact on physician supply and demand dynamics.”

This book is designed to guide hospital administrators, hospitalist administrators, hospitalist clinical directors, medical staff leaders (chief medical officer, vice president of medical affairs, department chiefs), physician recruiters, hospitalist physician candidates, and physician practice managers through the recruitment and retention process. It analyzes current trends in hospitalist medicine and explores factors contributing to the challenges associated with recruitment and retention. These trends are supported by data from the latest SHM survey (2007-2008) which are incorporated throughout this book.

This book presents tools and strategies that support the successful recruitment and retention of physicians. It is vital that hospitalist programs understand the dynamics of recruitment and retention and acknowledge common pitfalls in order to succeed at this challenging task. Keep in mind that the creation of a recruitment and retention plan does not guarantee success. Meticulous preparation and flawless execution of your plan combined with an honest and transparent approach will go a long way to support the successful recruitment and retention of outstanding hospitalist physicians.

Hospitalist Case Studies

“A revolution has begun to occur in modern medicine and the healthcare industry over the past decade or two. Who thought that insurers would be allowed into private practitioner’s offices to review quality of patient care? Who knew that physicians, the autonomous creatures that they are, would embrace standardized medical initiatives? Who would have imagined that evidence-based clinical guidelines, pay for (quality) performance incentives, publicly reported provider and hospital performance grades, rapid response teams, medication reconciliation, national patient safety initiatives, and patient satisfaction would have emerged collectively as the major drivers of hospital care? Who would have imagined physician roles such as the hospitalist, procedurist, and nocturnist just 15 years ago? Few in the medical field would have expected family practitioners and internists to leave the portion of their practice that enabled them to care for their hospitalized patients—especially after they worked so hard to gain the privilege. For these and other reasons, the spotlight is on hospitalists to “fix” many of the hospital’s and the overall healthcare system’s major problems. Perhaps no other emerging specialty has been under such pressure before, but also has not been given such opportunity to change patient care for the better.

Hospitalist Case Studies was derived in recognition of the myriad responsibilities of today’s hospitalist. The case studies are extracted from actual issues that hospitalist programs nationwide have faced. They are used to illustrate the day-to-day interface between the hospitalist and the healthcare system. The presentations serve as a vehicle to promote discussion and drive the creative spirit beyond conflict and toward resolution. Tactics and strategies are provided to deal with each complex problem presented.”

The Hospitalist Program Management Guide, 2nd Edition

“Hospitalist Management Guide, 2nd Edition provides the nuts and bolts to run an effective hospitalist program and provides a cutting edge perspective on the hospitalist program of the future. We have set out to build the foundation for a successful hospitalist program from the ground up. We present the most up-to-date strategies to enhance the practice’s clinical and financial performance and then progress to more advanced topics. We could not have accomplished our objectives without the participation of our contributing authors. These individuals are outstanding thought leaders in their respective fields. We would like to thank them for taking the time to contribute and add value to our book.”

Tools and Strategies for an Effective Hospitalist Program

“Over the past 15 years the field of Hospital Medicine has grown dramatically. The number of Hospitalists and programs recruiting them has grown exponentially, and there are few if any programs we know of that are not actively recruiting new Hospitalists. Although the specialty is growing rapidly, however, the demand for quality Hospitalists is surpassing the supply.  As a result, Hospitalist Program directors are faced with the task of providing high quality services while managing an impossible workload…..

In undertaking this project, it was our goal to reach out to programs nationwide that were willing to share their tools, gather the ones that they felt were essential to their program’s success, and share as many as possible with our readers. The result is a hands-on tools book that we hope provides you with a solid foundation on which to build or reformulate a Hospitalist Program dedicated to quality care and patient satisfaction… The tools are meant to serve as a guide and can be customized to fit any hospitalist program.”
